Sub League 08 Qualifier 2 -
Sudden Change of Venue Couldn't Stop Great Grappling! ! !
LOTS of
competitors, LOTS of great matches, LOTS of good sportsmanship, LOTS of positive
vibes,
LOTS of FUN! ! !
It almost didn't happen. We got a call Thursday morning at 9:00 am telling us that we had been bumped from our venue (Liberty High School) for Sub League Event 2 due to Senator Clinton making a speech. We scrambled and were able to find another location (HUGE thank you to LHS Wrestling Coach Givens and CHS Athletic Director Kris Welch for coming through for us) at Century High School. With 180 competitors, 42 divisions, and approximately 250 spectators in attendance, Sub League Event 2 went off without a hitch.
HUGE thanks goes out to Eric Loar, Rodney Buswell, and Andy Wong who helped us make over 200 phone calls on Thursday and Friday to let everyone know that the venue had been changed. You guys ROCK! ! !
Also, big thanks to the competitors and the coaches who displayed great sportsmanship and professionalism, refs (Santiago, Walsh, Debruge, Rubin, McTigue, and Locke to name just a few), the event staff (over 20 GREAT folks - Bourgeois, Estrada, Huegli, Zelinski, and MANY more), and everyone who came and enjoyed the day of great grappling.
All athletes that finished in one of the top five places (including ties) have qualified for the Championship Tournament on May 31. 1st place winners have earned free entry into the finals. CONGRATULATIONS.

Sub-League 08
begins March 8! ! !

The Submission Wrestling LeagueTM (Sub-League) is the premier no-gi grappling league on the west coast. We are
going into our third season. Last year we had grapplers from Oregon, Washington,
Idaho, Montana, California, and Nevada compete in our events. Here are last
year's numbers:
Tournaments: 4
Total Number of competitors: 365
Largest event: 253
This year is looking to be event bigger and better than last year. We made a lot of changes to help promote better competition and lots of opportunities for the athletes. We know your going to like them.
Background
The motivation behind starting the Sport Submission Wrestling LeagueTM (Sub-League) and
www.subleague.com, is to grow the sports of submission grappling, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, and western wrestling throughout the Northwest.

It is our hope that we will help in promoting a community of grapplers that will grow and flourish as our sport becomes better known to people. We are working to create a consistent venue for good, healthy, positive competition.
The original Submission LeagueTM concept and format was created by
Karl Tanswell and Rosi Sexton in the U.K. "The idea behind the submission league was to
develop a competition which would showcase submission wrestling at its best. We
wanted to move away from point scoring and create an environment where
submissions are everything." Thus, this format doesn't favor the takedown /
control wrestler or the positional Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu competitor. Instead, this
type of event favors the athlete that can complete submissions against an
uncooperative opponent in a short, defined amount of time.
Competing in a pool format (where you wrestle all the competitors in your
group), rather then a brackets (where the number of competitors is cut in half
each round), and having a clear point system (no points within a match - simply
submission or draw) allows for Submission League events the following benefits:
1. Athletes get lots of opportunity to compete (usually 3 - 6
matches an event)
2. The is less drama / controversy because there is
less subjective judging during a match - either an athlete get a submission,
gets submitted, or it is a draw. Points don't count within a match.
3. The "league" concept encourages the submission
wrestling community to train and compete over a longer period of time --
promoting a higher, more consistent quality of submission wrestling all the way
around.
4. The format allows an event to move quickly. We have
run two seasons so far moving an average of 150 competitors per event through 3
to 6 matches, all in one day... which compared to any tournament standard is
quick.
We are hopeful that others, once they've experienced the Submission LeagueTM
structure, will be pleased with its emphasis on participation and it quick
format. It should be a lot a grappling for everyone.
