May Sub League Open

SATURDAY MAY 17, 2025

Oregon State Fair and Exposition Center – Salem, Oregon

For the past 19 years, Sub League’s signature round-robin and submission-focused format has provided great competition experience for both competitors and spectators alike. Make plans to join us for Jiu Jitsu at its best in May.

Visit the Sub League and Ground Warrior Rules page to learn all about what’s new in 2025!

Due to popular demand, all matches will end with a win (no more draws). Submissions are king and no points are counted within a match so make sure you get after your subs. If no submission is earned during the match, submission attempts are tracked as advantages to decide the winner. If no submission is earned and advantages are tied, penalties, and finally the referee’s decision, will decide the match. The decision is based on positional dominance and overall match control.

Where can I see the list of competitors?

You can view the list of competitors, sorted by division, on the event’s Smoothcomp page. Click on the Athletes tab to see the full list.

How can I make changes and corrections to my registration?

Last chance to change registration: 11:59 pm on the Monday before the event

All changes and corrections must be made online by the competitor (or parent) by logging into your Smoothcomp account and modifying your registration details.

All competitors have until 11:59 pm on Monday before the event to make any corrections and/or changes to their registrations. After 11:59 pm on Monday before the event, the registration will lock, and there will no further changes allowed.

Competitors who are alone in their division should choose to either self-move themselves up a division or cancel their registration for a 95% refund or 100% coupon to a future subleague.com event.

If you have trouble changing your division, please visit: https://support.smoothcomp.com/article/89-how-to-change-weightclass-or-cancel.

What if no one else is in my division?

After the change deadline (11:59 pm on Monday before the event), competitors who do not have anyone in their division may be moved by the Bracketing Manager into another division. If no suitable division is available, the competitor will receive a refund on their registration.

Note that it is common for Youth competitors to be combined in 2-year age increments in order to give competitors more matches. Teen ages are also often combined.

What is your cancellation policy?

If after registration closes we cannot provide you with a match, we will refund your registration.

Athletes who no-show, don’t make weight, or are disqualified for any other reason, automatically forfeit their registration fee in full. Funds are not rolled over.

How do I use my coupon code from the last event to register?

If you have an active coupon code from a previous subleague.com event, please email subleague.com’s Registration Manager at tracy@subleague.com to request your updated code. Registration closes on Sunday before the event.

COMMON REASONS FOR DISQUALIFICATION
Note: No refunds or credits are issued for disqualification

#1 NOT MAKING WEIGHT
The weight division you register for has a maximum weight listed. You will step on the scale right before your bracket begins, fully dressed in your competition attire. If you weigh more than the maximum weight listed, you will be disqualified. If you weigh more than the maximum weight listed, you will not receive a refund or a credit. There is NO WEIGHT ALLOWANCE.

Our advice to all competitors: If in doubt, go with the higher weight division to avoid the stress of possible disqualification. It is okay to weigh less than the weight division range; you just cannot weigh more. All corrections to your registration must be made online by 11:59 pm on Monday before the event on Smoothcomp.

#2 NOT KNOWING THE RULES
Take the time to review the rules now, including the Allowed and Disallowed Holds and Takedowns for your age/skill level in the Competition Rules. Remember that Sub League and Ground Warrior are round-robin, submission-focused tournaments.

#3 MISSING THE UNIFORM REQUIREMENTS
Only white, royal blue, black, and pink gis are allowed for all competitors. Pockets in your no-gi shorts? Sew them up now! Pockets, zippers, loops and other potential hangups are not allowed on your competition attire. Read more on uniform requirements in the Competition Attire and Hygiene section of the Competition Rules.

#4 NOT CHECKING THE SCHEDULE
The live event schedule will be available on Smoothcomp. It is a live schedule, meaning times can shift up and/or down dramatically throughout the event. Note that Brackets starting later in the day may shift up to 90 minutes earlier than originally scheduled. Please refresh the online schedule often and plan to be in the building, dressed and ready to compete, at least 1 hour before your bracket’s final start time.

EVENT SCHEDULE

NEW: LIVE AND DYNAMIC SCHEDULE

The Sub League Open and Ground Warrior tournaments follow a dynamic LIVE schedule powered by Smoothcomp. Your match start time(s) will shift (earlier or later) from the projected start time displayed at the start of the event.

It is not unusual for times to change rapidly throughout the day. Brackets starting later in the day may shift up to 90 minutes earlier than originally scheduled. It is the competitor’s responsibility to monitor any changes in the schedule to start times and mat numbers for their bracket.

Competitors must be checked in and ready to compete at the times listed on the LIVE schedule. Competitors not checked in and ready to compete at their start time will be disqualified and forfeit their registration fee in full.

By the end of the day on Thursday before the tournament, the event brackets and preliminary schedule will be released on the event’s Smoothcomp page under the Brackets and Schedule tabs. At the event, the LIVE schedule will be displayed on a monitor located at the bullpen. Additionally, you can check the dynamic LIVE schedule by checking the tab on your mobile device throughout the event: https://support.smoothcomp.com/article/90-find-out-your-dynamic-starting-time.
